Frac Sand is used for hydraulic fracturing, a process where pressurized water, sand, and chemicals are used to break open shale fractures to free the oil and natural gas deposits within. The sand is used to keep the fractures propped open so that the oil and gas can be removed. 

Frac sand is a high-purity quartz sand with very durable and very round grains.  It is also a very tough material that can resist compressive forces of up to several tons per square inch.
